Discover the Cirque of Navacelles : A Geological Gem in the Heart of the Gorges de la Vis
Nestled in the heart of the Gorges de la Vis, a true canyon that cuts through the Causses of Larzac between Blandas to the south and Campestre to the north, the Cirque de Navacelles is a geological wonder not to be missed. This unique site is a natural treasure shaped by millions of years of erosion.

With its 300-meter depth, the Cirque de Navacelles is an ancient meander abandoned by the Vis River, which carved a new, more direct path, creating a spectacular waterfall over 8 meters high.
At the center of this impressive cirque lies the Rocher de la Vierge, also known as “the oyster,” surrounded by a highly fertile strip of land, a remnant of the river’s former bed. This area, with its lush meadows, enchanting waterfall, and wooded riverside, offers a striking contrast to the arid, rocky cliffs of the gorges.
A Human and Natural Heritage
For centuries, people have harnessed this exceptional landscape. They built terraces, maintained the meadows, and cultivated strip fields, creating an environment ideal for agriculture. The homes, grouped into three hamlets along the meander and the Vis River, add a human touch to this grand site.
The experience of discovering the Cirque de Navacelles is even more impressive when approached from the panoramic viewpoints of Blandas and Baume Auriol, after crossing the vast arid expanses of the Causses.
A Site to Explore in Depth
The Grand Site of Navacelles is not limited to its famous cirque. It also includes the Gorges de la Vis and the vast Causses, these steppes shaped by centuries of agro-pastoral activities. This authentic landscape, where nature and human history intertwine, deserves to be explored in all its splendor.
